BFF Presents on 100-Year Review of Research on Black Families

Dr. Chrishana M. Lloyd addresses the audience at the 2024 annual convening of the National Council on Family Relations.

Black Families Flourishing is grateful to the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) for inviting our initiative’s leader, Dr. Chrishana M. Lloyd, to address the attendees of this highly respected conference at the 2024 annual convening in Bellevue, WA. NCFR, founded in 1938, is recognized as the oldest institution focused solely on family research practices.

Renowned members of academia, policy, and practice from across the country attended the event, themed “Building Resilience Among Individuals, Families and Communities.”

Dr. Lloyd, who presented on Nov. 23 as part of a programming block centered on family policies, shared highlights from Child Trends’ 100-Year Review of Research on Black Families. The two-volume report spans 1920 to 2019 and provides a review of key scholars, the funders of research on Black families and the goals of the research, and the methods and approaches used to conduct it. A key goal of the report, which will be expanded upon through the Black Families Flourishing initiative, is “to inform the development of an applied research agenda focused on Black families with children that is appropriate for the 21st century.”

“NCFR is where all of the best minds in research and family science gather,” Lloyd said of the November 2024 event. “It’s about content, methods, and the latest on anything happening in the field. People there are from multiple disciplines, from sociologists to family scientists to social workers. It was an honor to share our work and, just as importantly, our approach to research with that audience.”
