Black families with children have a wide range of family structures, caregiving relationships, and living arrangements across the United States. This Black Families Flourishing Fresh Look data point analyzes 2019-2023 American Community Survey (ACS) data on where Black family households with children are located across the country. The findings show that about 1 in 6 U.S. family households with children are Black family households, with the largest concentrations found in the South. The analysis also highlights the diversity of Black family structures: 41% are two-parent households, 41% are one-parent households, and the remaining 18% include multigenerational, skip-generation, and other-kin arrangements.
This data point offers a nuanced picture of Black family life across the United States and highlights the ways this data can be used to inform research, policy, and practice.
